Scratchbuild
#4: Manda
Here are
some large images of the fourth scratchbuild from Bill's Kitchen: a
mini-diorama of the famous scene in DESTROY ALL MONSTERS where Manda
wrecks the monorail tracks. The diorama is 1/250 scale (in scale with
Kaiyodo's 1968 Godzilla); the base measures 30 cm long by 13 cm wide;
Manda itself is 40 cm long. Manda was sculpted using the same technique
as the Hedorah and Kamakiras, using Super Sculpy to make the rough shapes
and then doing the detail work in Milliput. For Manda's scales I used
custom made scale texture stamps. I tried to accentuate the folds and
wrinkles the are present in the real Manda puppet. I also added some
individually sculpted scales to break up some of the regular pattern.
The base was made mainly of styrene; the monorail tracks used styrene
strips, as were the pylon pieces. I used a plyers to rough up the edges
of the broken pieces.
